"Please help us b/c we cannot help ourselves. We cannot change the laws that make the judges put us back with our parents that abuse us and do not have enough food to give us because they spend it on alcohol. We cannot make our goverment open up adoptions so that we do not have to grow-up in orphanages where we are also molested and have no parents. We cannot help the fact that we have nowhere to go when we turn 18. What are we supposed to do? Where should we go? You can send money to us... you can pray for us... you can come and and hold us and love us...but who is going to change the laws? We were hoping that you could send a letter or call your congressmen. Maybe you could ask him about it. Ask him why when we are raped we are sent back and how can this be changed. Ask him what you can do to change the laws. We can't. we don't understand. This is the only life we know..."
I wrote this with specific instances in mind. After sitting through and hearing of case after case of children being returned to bad situations, I thought I should communicate it to you. I hope this will be an encouragement to some of the people in the U.S. to contact their congress man and see what they can do to change the laws in Guatemala. Private ministries are only able to help a fraction of the thousands of children that are in the system or should be in.
God Bless.

I do not think anyone was injured in the storm in our town. The road was impassable until this morning and there is still no way to get into Guatemala City as of my writing this. There is hardly any produce in town, but we do have enough food for about a week. Mom was supposed to fly today but had to change her ticket due to the Volcano problem in Guatemala City. I have to mention - I saw the dire danger on that volcano at least 5 years ago, and tried to warn people... Mom would not have been able to get there anyway since all three routes (maybe there are more) are completely impassable due to the mudslides.

We were out of water for a while when a tree fell on one pipes leading from one of our artesian springs on the mountain. Other than that, we are all doing well.

There is a Psalm the kids memorized that talks about destruction all around, but we will not fear because God is with us.Elizabeth Stukenberghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11811447114019274151noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4414150859328117016.post-73706545361848645792010-05-23T14:51:00.001-07:002010-05-23T15:19:49.586-07:00Baby Davey

David Benjamin Reichard was born on April 11. Last Sunday we attended a church here in Tzanchaj that our friend Jose has been attending. We noticed how many children were in the service. Nate and Dave prompted me to go translate for them to ask the pastor, of whom we did not even know the name, if he would like us to start a Sunday school. We asked him to pray about it and ask his deacons their opinion, and we would get back to him. We went into town yesterday and found his house through questioning the townspeople, and asked him if he had an answer. His only qualm with us was that we would “abandon” the children as he had the unfortunate experience previously of his teachers when they went to college or got married. After asking us some questions, the pastor, “Don Philipe”, as we heard him called, has agreed to have us dedicate to Sunday school for the space of a year in the church. We are very excited about this opportunity, and the ability to instill Godly principles into the children of our town. We want to grow the kids here up to serve the Lord, follow His ways, and have abundant life. After all, as I like to say, God's ways are not grievous. Au contraire! They make for the healthiest, happiest, most successful life out there.Elizabeth Stukenberghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11811447114019274151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4414150859328117016.post-58043331441324875302010-05-21T19:38:00.000-07:002010-05-21T20:09:49.356-07:00Martina<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5PqBBnVaRkbJ2FfDV2D0b0CO38Uj7o6jsEVswRH7tIf4cAaApyoJgwWv8mJm7CfPmwh0PZUVhAry7-htb-SJXPmYcUbQrV8Wo2m8-rLnexLFgdTCzE6PH_54f7DpiAUChQTDKozNZTZ7V/s200/Martina.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5473919524313820450" />
I had a heap of ideas and aspirations on what I wanted to achieve while here in Guatemala. God is teaching me some about my ways and His ways. I wanted to write about a girl Deborah and Dave take care of in their home. It is her birthday, so today seems to be the perfect time.

I was expecting to do a lot of nursing type things with my new RN license when I got to Guatemala. As it is, I have done 2 weekends of clinic work in Canilla, Quiche and one week with a medical team to some villages in Guatemala. Not as much experience being a nurse as I thought I would get. I was so excited about my novel abilities that I have not even really thought much about physical therapy. But I guess what I am expecting does not always happen.

Martina has just turned 13. She came from Canilla a couple years ago. She had been burned in a fire and also appears to have cerebral palsy. She struggles with daily tasks most of us do without thinking. She has difficulty walking and cannot talk. Some of her muscles have perpetually contracted muscles (spasticity), while others seem to have very little strength or coordination. She is at risk for many complications with regards to her muscles, bones, and due to her decreased mobility.

Recently (the last two weeks), I have begun working with more concentrated effort with Martina. We are working on improving her walking, increasing her communication with PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), and defining her fine motor skills.

Please pray for Martina that she will respond to teaching, “learn to talk and walk” as the kids pray at each meal, and that she will come to understand the love of her Savior.Elizabeth Stukenberghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11811447114019274151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4414150859328117016.post-66411512333541727062010-03-31T11:47:00.000-07:002010-03-31T13:03:29.935-07:00Martina - one of the home childrenBelow is a child profile of Martina, our special needs child. I go about my busy day that involves teaching, cooking, cleaning, giving inexpert advice on drugs, and just being a mom and wife. We are really having a blessed time here in Santiago Atitlan, Solola, Tzanchaj, Guatemala. My biggest regret is that I do not speak the language. We live on the edge of lake Atitlan that has at least than 3 dialects along its shores.

Katherine has taken well to being here. She loves her beans and rice and thoroughly enjoys having loads of other kids to play with.

I taught the lesson the first Sunday we were here at the little kids' meeting that my parents and the kids do every week at the refuge village. My Good Samaritan story was translated into Tz'utujil from Spanish by my family's Tz'utujil friend to about 10 kids.

I am glad that we have a link to the indigenous people here through Jose, who also is the caretaker for my parents' property. The Tzutujil people are kind and polite, but keep their distance. I am not sure why it is, but they seem very wary of foreigners. Last year, social services sent a child to live here with my parents because his father beat his sister to death while drunk. The mother told everyone in the village that foreigners stole her child. The people came at night with torches and sticks and machetes to take back their child who they feared would be roasted and eaten. My family, who have been robbed at gunpoint no less than 3 times, had their guard up and thought they were in for round 4. My parents were able to clear up the misunderstanding and everyone went home. Our understanding is that people here in Santiago know we are here, but we do not know what they think of us.

My parents and sister and her husband who run the foster home have in the past been very busy with 30-40 children to care for. Because of the responsibility of the children, additional ministry to the neighborhood and area in which they live has been limited. Over the last couple years, they have been able to adopt out most of the children, the last of which was completed only last week. This has freed them up to be able to reach outside their home more than weekly visits to the refuge village.

The refuge village is the remains of a part of a little town that was covered in a mudslide during the rainy season two years ago. An extinct volcano filled with water and the side of the crater broke open under the weight. This is the same type of event that happened to the previous capitol Antigua, Guatemala, before it was relocated when a different extinct volcano, which was named "Agua" dumped loads of mud on the city 2 times. The people still live in little tarp shanties that say "European Comission" and "US AID". Many refugees have been relocated by the Guatemalan government, but several people still live many feet above their old homes covered in long dried mud.

To these people we would love to reach out more. We are not sure how to do it, especially with the language barrier. Many of the children in the refuge village do not go to school. We would like to look into opening a preschool for the beginning of the new school year in January. I do not know how that would happen. My parents already legally have a school, since they teach the children at home using a Guatemalan approved correspondence curriculum called "Hebron". This preschool would be an extension of their school. We would like to teach the children English and Spanish and also give them a foundation in knowledge of God.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
Elizabeth Stukenberghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11811447114019274151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4414150859328117016.post-32729901799335559252010-03-10T13:19:00.000-08:002010-03-31T10:12:50.392-07:00The Pool ChroniclesIn the constant battle to fight childhood boredom, the adults must continue to come up with ingenious ways of keeping the children entertained during their off hours of school. The problem is that so many activities these days follow this simple formula... the excitement of activity 'X' is inversely proportional to 'Y' amount of energy expended in 'T' time. Their is a rare occasion where the 'Good Idea' factors in, which completely dispels the whole previous formula resulting in an activity that kids will continue to enjoy day after day AND tires them out by dinner.

The pool has been a great asset toward fighting childhood boredom. The issue is that pool has hardly been warm enough to tempt the kids in lately. Their has been this instinctual drive to find a way to heat the pool. The first version of the pool heater consisted of water pumping through a copper coil in a fire place. With little success we decided on marching forward with version 2... a barrel.

Barrels were and still are commonly used to store and ship contents. Many folk know them as portable fire pits. Pop a few holes toward the bottom, fill it with garbage, drop a match, and you'll be singing songs and cooking marshmallows. To us, however, we see it as a fine way to heat the pool... at least right now we do.

It is all simple really. Stick a barrel in a pool, pump air into it, and light gasoline, drenched logs. We'll let you know how this experiment turns out.

P.S.
Are PS's okay for blogs?Nathaniel Hurleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11506810276396302682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4414150859328117016.post-76380646160619280072010-03-09T10:11:00.000-08:002010-03-31T10:13:30.376-07:00Guatemala Ministry - Reichard Newsletter Nov - Feb 10 Dave Reichardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00511131610044695821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4414150859328117016.post-83968491662921958002010-03-03T13:20:00.001-08:002010-03-03T13:20:22.642-08:00Testing... simply ignore this post.Nathaniel Hurleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11506810276396302682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4414150859328117016.post-6965683518072622702010-03-03T12:32:00.000-08:002010-03-03T12:37:22.197-08:00Under ConstructionWe are currently underway constructing some new online resources.
